Out of necessity, many did that with the resources they could pull together on short notice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now they may be searching for resources for improving online courses. To assist that work, Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae and its partners recently published a comprehensive guide, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/faculty-playbook\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimizing High-Quality Digital Learning Experiences: A Playbook for Faculty<\/span><\/i><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/facultyplaybook\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This resource\u00a0 is designed to guide faculty in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinking and designing strategically to amplify the opportunities the online environment provides in both their digital spaces and physical classrooms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The playbook contains research, inspirational examples, practical guidance, and resource lists on improving online teaching practices that confront equity gaps for minoritized and poverty-affected students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embedded in the playbook are references to several dozen resources and practical improvements on equity-centered and accessible design, flexible syllabi, engaging class activities, meaningful assessment, choosing technology, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here we highlight a selection of the resources recommended by Lynette M. O\u2019Keefe, Ph.D., Director, Research and Innovation at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelearningconsortium.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online Learning Consortium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OLC) and a contributor to the playbook.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_322\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-322\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/design-enhance-optimize-219x300.png\" alt=\"Illustration from Optimizing High-Quality Digital Learning Experiences, Faculty Playbook describing Design, Optimize, Enhance approach\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/design-enhance-optimize-219x300.png 219w, https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/design-enhance-optimize.png 498w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Each section of the Faculty Playbook suggests practical ways to Design, Enhance, and Optimize elements of online courses.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur resources are built on research and best practices,\u201d she says. \u201cThey are primarily geared toward online instruction, but they\u2019re just as applicable to blended learning. Even instructors teaching face to face, or hyflex courses, may find something useful in these. They speak to ways to engage students whether that\u2019s in a classroom or online.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Resources for course design principles<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Apply backward course design:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In backward course design, you begin by identifying desired results. ASCD, a professional association for educators, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascd.org\/ASCD\/images\/siteASCD\/publications\/infographics\/the-backward-design-approach-infographic.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summarizes backward course design in a helpful infographic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A more comprehensive discussion of it is included in the playbook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Apply basic quality standards:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A plan to evaluate the quality of your online courses is essential. This page on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/teaching\/designteach\/design\/learningobjectives.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designing and teaching a course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers guidance for creating student-centered course design. Their three-point model encourages iteratively improving learning objectives, instructional activities, and assessments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Apply effective principles: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Carnegie Mellon Eberly Center also provides a useful summary to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/teaching\/principles\/teaching.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven core principles that make teaching more effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Use multiple modes of learning: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online courses should use multiple modes of learning to support different learning styles. The ION Professional eLearning Program at University of Illinois Springfield suggests several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uis.edu\/ion\/resources\/tutorials\/pedagogy\/instructional-strategies-for-online-courses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instructional strategies to build into online courses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as panels, symposia, projects, and self-directed learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Design for all students: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider web accessibility and usability when designing online courses.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Arkansas, Little Rock provides a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/disability\/online-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checklist of 10 components of universal design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as clear site navigation and captioning videos.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAST is a nonprofit that created The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/udlguidelines.cast.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal Design for Learning Guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which provides a framework to improve online teaching and learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar set of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/standards-guidelines\/wcag\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">web content accessibility guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes from the Web Accessibility Initiative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Design for equity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peralta College\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.peralta.edu\/de\/equity-initiative\/equity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online Equity Rubric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a course evaluation tool to help instructors design more equitable and inclusive online courses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Resources for teaching practice<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Find supplementary tools: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand your institution\u2019s LMS and augment it with tools that support course outcomes and goals. A good place to browse is the list maintained by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptools4learning.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top Tools for Learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of products, apps, and software to integrate with your online learning course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Set the stage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introducing yourself to students and setting course expectations establishes instructional continuity. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/topr.online.ucf.edu\/course-orientation-module\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">course orientation module<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Teaching Online Pedagogical Repository at The University of Central Florida will help you get your course started effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Create active learning with interaction: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of California, Davis guide to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ucdavis.edu\/courses\/34528\/pages\/types-of-interaction?module_item_id=4974\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designing and Teaching for Impact in Online Courses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discusses ways for students to interact with the instructor, each other, and the course content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Set clear and explicit expectations: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiley Publishing\u2019s Center for Teaching and Learning outlines guidance on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ctl.wiley.com\/course-expectations-why-you-need-them-and-how-to-communicate-them\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why you need course expectations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how to communicate them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Provide academic support: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NACADA, a professional organization for academic advising based at Kansas State University, has curated a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nacada.ksu.edu\/Resources\/Clearinghouse\/academicsupport.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehensive list of academic support resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3 essential resources for improving online courses<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asked for the most important concepts a new online instructor should start with, OLC\u2019s O\u2019Keefe recommended these principles:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply basic quality standards like those addressed in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelearningconsortium.org\/consult\/oscqr-course-design-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OLC Course Design Review Scorecard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure you build in accessibility with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ualr.edu\/disability\/online-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">universal design in online learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ucdavis.edu\/courses\/34528\/pages\/types-of-interaction?module_item_id=4974\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strong interaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the instructor and student, between students, and with course content.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Next steps<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College and university instructors need to be patient and review priorities while improving online courses, advises O\u2019Keefe. If you had to take your course online in a hurry in spring 2020, it couldn\u2019t have been perfect.
