{"id":4251,"date":"2022-01-31T10:16:14","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T16:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ele.local\/?p=4251"},"modified":"2022-01-31T10:16:14","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T16:16:14","slug":"4-tips-for-assessing-students-with-care-to-remove-barriers-to-equity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/blog\/4-tips-for-assessing-students-with-care-to-remove-barriers-to-equity\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Tips for Assessing Students with Care to Remove Barriers to Equity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As colleges and universities strive to remove barriers to equity for minoritized and poverty-affected students, it\u2019s essential to understand the ways in which assessment can contribute to those barriers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was the subject of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessing Students with Care<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the second in a series of Disciplinary Communities of Practice webinars offered in November and December 2021 by the Online Learning Consortium, the Association of Public &amp; Land-grant Universities, and Achieving the Dream, in partnership with Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Th<\/span>e <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplu.org\/news-and-media\/blog\/aplu-launches-faculty-learning-communities-for-discipline-focused-digital-teaching-and-learning\">Communities of Practice initiative<\/a> b<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rings together faculty and instructional staff in writing, math, biology, and chemistry to collaborate with like-minded peers across institutions. They identify, share, and develop discipline-specific teaching and learning strategies, with a focus on effective and equitable digital learning and teaching with technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Megan Tesene, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director of the Personalized Learning Consortium at APLU, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said during the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessing Students with Care<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> webinar that the COVID-19 pandemic has created a new normal where \u201cthe impetus was on us to be more caring and compassionate, especially during this crisis \u2014 which frankly we should be considering always, not just in a global pandemic. Folks have been learning how to engage students a little bit differently in ways that don&#8217;t necessarily look like the traditional model and continue those practices or grow them moving forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae and the network partners include many of these new strategies in the<\/span> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/caring-for-students-playbook\/\">Caring for Students Playbook<\/a><\/em>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which provides instructors with guidance for centering student care in their teaching. The playbook also includes resources on the topic of the first webinar in the series<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/blog\/equitizing-your-syllabus-6-tips-from-faculty\/\">reimagining and equitizing course syllabi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presenters and participants in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessing Students with Care<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> webinar offered several principles for equity-centered academic evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1. Align assessment needs and care<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicole Weber, Associate Vice President of Learning at OLC, said that as college and university instructors design their courses, \u201cCentering care in our assessments really starts with student needs and their lived experiences \u2014 where they are and also where they want to go. This is incredibly important as we support them in their personal growth and in their trajectory toward their career and contributions to the world as educated citizens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline-callout\"><b>Students show mastery<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Sanders-Lopez, professor of English at Georgia State University, asks students to produce short audio or video messages giving feedback about the course and their own work. \u201cThey\u2019re demonstrating mastery of the course content by sharing what they&#8217;ve learned, as well as about where they struggled with the course,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, she said, \u201cthey are positioned as experts because they are the ones giving advice to students that will come after them. They talk about their own self-development, personal growth, and struggles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, Weber added, \u201chigh-stakes proctored exams cause students a lot of anxiety, and, while there are discipline-specific instances where it&#8217;s necessary for students to take proctored exams, like when preparing for certifications, it&#8217;s also worthwhile to consider providing students with different ways of demonstrating their learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Related reading<\/span><\/i>: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/blog\/3-steps-for-centering-student-care-in-assessments\/\">3 Steps for Centering Student Care in Assessments<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>2. Incorporate a variety of assessment types<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Varying assessment types fosters equity by being inclusive of the different ways students prefer to learn \u201cand acknowledging the strengths they have in demonstrating their learning,\u201d\u00a0 Weber said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis creates a wonderful space for us to really lean into a multi-pronged assessment approach that incorporates traditional methods, like conventional exams,and mixes them more with authentic methods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some alternative assessment methods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer review<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-assessment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem-based learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussion boards<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Role play<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online journaling<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Related reading:<\/span><\/i><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/blog\/can-technology-enable-authentic-assessment-at-scale-in-higher-education\/\">Can Technology Enable Authentic Assessment at Scale in Higher Education?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>3. Be transparent with assessments<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s crucial to make clear to students how they can prepare for the assessment, what they can expect when they engage with the assessment, and what the criteria for success are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can be really transparent in our expectations by sharing them with students in places like announcements, assignment sheets, and overviews,\u201d Weber said. \u201cWhat will be covered? What should they consider as they work on a paper? What is the exam going to look like?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She cited recent research showing that students who received more transparency reported gains in areas that are important predictors of student success \u2014 academic confidence, a sense of belonging, and mastery of skills that employers value most when hiring. The research also found that these benefits were especially significant for minoritized, poverty-affected, and first-generation students.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline-callout\"><b>Game-based knowledge checks<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Fishback, professor of biology at Wake Technical Community College in North Carolina, uses learning games such as Kahoot, a platform for trivia-style games. \u201cThis is a great way, I find, to end a lecture or a particular section,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd it&#8217;s a way to know if they understand the basic knowledge content. Sometimes I will provide index cards so students can play along if they don&#8217;t have access to the technology. Overall, students really like Kahoot because they have fun earning points and playing against each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>4. Incorporating high-quality feedback<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tesene recommends the mnemonic FIDeLity as a reminder to use the characteristics of actionable feedback:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent: Give feedback daily, weekly, or as often as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immediate: Get feedback from students as soon as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discriminating: Make clear what the difference is between poor, acceptable, and exceptional work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loving: Be empathetic in the way you deliver your feedback.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to provide students with feedback that is both helpful and humanizing,\u201d said Tesene. Making sure the feedback comes quickly, and at regular intervals, she noted, prevents loss of momentum during the course and helps ensure students know where they stand. \u201cBeing discriminating lets students know what good work actually looks like, so they know what they\u2019re aiming for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As important as all the other characteristics, she said, is that feedback be loving: \u201cOur students are human. Bad feedback can make them feel a little discouraged and actually influence how they move forward.
