{"id":4428,"date":"2022-03-07T13:53:46","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T19:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ele.local\/?p=4428"},"modified":"2022-03-07T13:53:46","modified_gmt":"2022-03-07T19:53:46","slug":"leveraging-digital-tools-for-equitized-learning-inspiration-from-adapt-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/blog\/leveraging-digital-tools-for-equitized-learning-inspiration-from-adapt-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Leveraging Digital Tools for Equitized Learning: Inspiration from ADAPT 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Striving toward equity by leveraging digital tools, such as adaptive courseware, was the focus of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvcc.edu\/adapt\/lobby.cfm\">ADAPT<\/a>, a student-centered digital learning showcase presented in December 2021 by Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and Achieving the Dream.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The webinars and forum discussions in the virtual event underscored the potential of\u00a0<\/span>adaptive learning and leveraging digital tools to provide personalized learning to foster equity. But they also require careful planning to use effectively alongside equity-centered teaching practices, emphasized Van Davis, Service Design and Strategy Officer at Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae, in the closing plenary session.<\/p>\n<p>The event showcased work in equity-centered digital learning in recent years, including an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvcc.edu\/adapt\/concurrent.cfm?s=2\">all-student panel<\/a>, faculty in pilot projects, and instructional designers and other academic leaders.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All together, the sessions added up to an inspiring daylong progress report on digital learning featuring the insights of educators and learners who have been working with adaptive courseware first-hand, says Emilie Cook, Communications Manager for Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae. \u201cStrategically, ADAPT was built around the voices of the institutions and their students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recordings of the presentations and forums are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvcc.edu\/adapt\/index.cfm\">ADAPT event website<\/a> and on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCLKDHkxjoepBiy1IFcHDhoQ\">Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cook offered as other inspiring examples, sessions on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oC0PsymutLM&amp;t=1s\">creating more equitable courses through a continuous improvement process<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yRZEEx_f66g&amp;t=1s\">teaching effectively with adaptive courseware<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BzzAhXulp3A&amp;t=1s\">how to use data in the classroom<\/a>,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kicking off and summing up<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WJ0gJX0uJso&amp;t=1s\">keynote address from Sharon Leu, Executive in Residence at Jobs for the Future<\/a>, described the opportunity to address structural barriers to social and economic mobility with technology in post-secondary education. She said promoting equitable teaching and learning is one of the most pressing challenges of our time.<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LahGaQqE4zo\">closing plenary<\/a> noted how structural inequities are reflected in the most recent graduation rates at four-year institutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native American and Alaskan native \u2014 41.5 percent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black \u2014 45 percent\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latinx \u2014 58.7 percent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White \u2014 67.7 percent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asian \u2014 77 percent<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He emphasized five points made during the day\u2019s sessions about the effective use of digital learning to promote equity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Center students at the heart of transformation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurture and accommodate students by including them in the transformation process. \u201cStudents know and understand their needs, oftentimes much better than we do,\u201d Davis said. \u201cWe need to listen to that as we design and implement transformative efforts. Being student centered means being able to recognize that students have different goals and adapt to and address those goals in the classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases adaptive courseware and leveraging digital tools allows students to reinforce their learning and learn at their own pace. As one student put it, Davis said, \u201cadaptive courseware put her in the driver\u2019s seat of her learning and her education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><\/b><b>2. Prioritize personalizing learning<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An online context often implies mass distribution, but the point of equity-centered digital learning is to personalize student experiences by helping faculty differentiate learning among students, and helping students understand and direct their own learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnother student talked about how the use of technology and adaptive courseware specifically gave her more confidence in her ability to learn and excel in her courses,\u201d Davis said, adding, \u201cIt doesn&#8217;t have to be adaptive courseware. It can be something as simple as a shared Google Doc.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Implementation matters<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital learning tools don\u2019t magically close equity gaps. It matters how they are put to use. The day\u2019s presenters brought up evidence-based teaching practices like these:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging students in active learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scaffolding collaborative learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessible, just-in-time support<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessible, just-in-time feedback on formative assessments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting cognitive overload<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designing for metacognition and self-regulation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b><\/b><b>4. Use data to guide continuous improvement<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTransformation involves constant effort.\u201d Davis said. \u201cAs we evaluate, we select, we implement, and we assess new tools and pedagogical practices. It\u2019s a cycle of refining and implementing, refining and implementing, over and over and over again. Our efforts are never just one and done.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A critical piece of that evaluation is the collection and analysis of course-level data. \u201cFor the racially minoritized students, poverty-affected students, and other minoritized students, it is especially critical to be able to disaggregate that data,\u201d Davis said. \u201cWe&#8217;re never going to have a true picture of what&#8217;s happening in our classrooms if we&#8217;re not able to see all of our students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Institutional support is critical<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty and staff won\u2019t be able to achieve this on their own, Davis said: \u201cSometimes that support can come in the form of professional development; at other times it may come in more general administrative support.\u201d Relieved of administrative burdens, faculty focus on teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Centering equity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur work sits at the intersection of equity, digital learning, and evidence-based teaching,\u201d Davis said. \u201cOur mission is to help institutions equitably serve Black, Latinx, Indigenous, poverty-affected and first-generation students, and we have a long way to go. Those students have not always been well served by higher education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo we see that there are still significant achievement gaps that we need to address in higher education,\u201d Davis said. \u201cEquity and successfully serving these students matters for those students, it matters for their families, and it ultimately matters for our
