The individual items in the collection were developed in spring 2020 or later to support faculty responding to changes necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Like everything in the Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae resource library, the collection is concerned with ensuring that digital learning in a variety of modalities is data informed and centers equity for Black, Latino, Indigenous, poverty-affected, and first-generation students. Most of the resources were developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/about-us\/#partners\">Every Learner\u2019s network partners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia O\u2019Sullivan, Content Manager for Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae, says that even though the resources capture a moment in time that vaccines and medical treatments will hopefully put behind us, \u201cwe felt these teaching continuity resources, unfortunately, still have value in light of other academic disruptions. Those include disruptive climate events and natural disasters, the student mental health crisis, and other as-of-yet unknown societal disruptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline-callout\">\n<h2>What\u2019s in the teaching continuity resource collection<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/time-for-class-covid-19-edition-part-1\/\"><em>Time for Class: COVID-19 Edition, Part 1<\/em><\/a> presents the \ufb01rst results from an ongoing series of surveys and focus groups with faculty, designed to understand the impact of COVID-19 on higher ed.<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/suddenly-online-national-undergraduate-survey\/\">Suddenly Online: National Undergraduate Survey<\/a><\/em> describes results from Digital Promise\u2019s national, random-sample survey of more than 1,000 college students whose coursework moved suddenly from in person to completely online.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/public-universities-respond-to-covid-19-serving-our-students\/\"><em>Public Universities Respond to COVID-19: Serving Our Students<\/em><\/a> is a webinar from four weeks into the pandemic about how two provosts were planning for remote learning in the summer and fall terms.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/asu-remote-2020-the-future-of-learning-every-learner-everywhere-any-time\/\"><em>The Future of Learning: Every Learner, Everywhere, Anytime<\/em><\/a> summarizes findings in a survey of faculty teaching remotely during the pandemic, including a growing positive perception of online learning.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/time-for-class-covid-19-edition-part-2\/\"><em>Time for Class: COVID-19 Edition, Part 2<\/em><\/a> is the second report in an ongoing series designed to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on teaching and learning in higher ed.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/lab-based-courses\/\"><em>Lab-Based Courses<\/em><\/a> is an overview of a variety of options for lab-based courses to transition experimental activities to a digital learning environment.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/assessments-and-grading\/\"><em>Assessments and Grading Toolkit<\/em><\/a> recommends adjustments to make to assessment practices during academic disruption.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/communication-engagement-strategies-at-a-distance\/\"><em>Communication and Engagement Strategies<\/em><\/a> is a webinar focused on sustaining engagement among faculty, staff, and students during the closure of community college campuses.<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/innovative-approaches-to-content-delivery-and-assessment-of-student-learning\/\">Innovative Approaches to Content Delivery and Assessment of Student Learning<\/a><\/em> is a webinar focused on practical tools used by innovative community college faculty during campus closures.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/teaching-in-a-time-of-covid-what-makes-a-difference\/\"><em>Teaching in a Time of COVID: What Makes a Difference<\/em><\/a> summarizes findings from Digital Promise\u2019s Survey of Student Perceptions of Remote Teaching and Learning in May 2020.<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/time-for-class-covid-19-edition\/\">Time for Class COVID-19 Edition, Part 3<\/a><\/em> is the third report on a series of surveys designed to understand the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on teaching and learning.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/sharing-stories-of-accomplishment-resilience-and-student-success\/\"><em>Sharing Stories of Accomplishment, Resilience, and Student Success<\/em><\/a> is a webinar on how community colleges supported faculty, staff, and students during campus closures.<\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/lessons-learned-a-toolkit-for-post-pandemic-higher-education-with-equity-and-student-care-at-the-center\/\">Lessons Learned: A Toolkit for Post-Pandemic Higher Education With Equity and Student Care at the Center<\/a><\/em> offers recommendations and resources for improving teaching practices and redesigning courses for equity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Highlights from the collection<\/h2>\n<p>O\u2019Sullivan says the teaching continuity collection includes a mix of resources that are already among the most downloaded, as well as some overlooked gems. Archived webinar recordings, for example, contain valuable insights that might not be discovered by educators unless they were regular subscribers to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCLKDHkxjoepBiy1IFcHDhoQ\/videos\">Every Learner YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Surveys with educators and students at different stages of the pandemic \u2014 and findings from those surveys \u2014 feature prominently in the collection. Most faculty, instructional designers, academic support, and academic leaders had questions in common about student access to technology, student engagement during a time of crisis, and creating accessible digital versions of their course materials.<\/p>\n<p>The materials also highlight the experiences and expertise at community colleges and historically Black colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p>The series of <em>Time For Class<\/em> surveys conducted by Tyton Partners during the first year of the pandemic, in particular, \u201cwere a helpful temperature check,\u201d says O\u2019Sullivan. \u201cIt was a way to listen to what faculty and students were saying and what solutions were still needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Sullivan highlights three takeaways from the collection has a whole:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Digital learning is not a temporary fix in a crisis or an add-on to traditional teaching. It is central to higher education\u2019s goals.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The pandemic gave educators insights on the life experiences and learning challenges for the most vulnerable students and faculty.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Academic disruption was not a singular event related to the pandemic. It will manifest in various ways for individuals and institutions moving forward.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Phases of teaching continuity<\/h2>\n<p>The resources in the collection were developed during the three phases of the pandemic \u2014 emergency, solutions, and reflection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emergency phase<\/strong> \u2014 Resources developed at the start of the pandemic helped institutions that were scrambling to move teaching and learning online. This includes surveys of faculty and students and a conversation with provosts about what issues they are having and how they are coping with the shutdown of their campuses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solutions phase<\/strong> \u2014 Resources developed during the next period responded to some of the common issues faculty experienced after the initial emergency move to virtual teaching. For example, the <em>Assessments and Grading Toolkit<\/em> was designed to help faculty assess the work of students who were going without in-class and synchronous testing for the first time. The <em>Lab-Based Courses<\/em> resource provides an overview of online lab products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reflection phase<\/strong> \u2014 Several resources reflect on and synthesize learning from the emergency shift to remote learning and the adoption of other learning modalities enabled by digital learning technology, including fully face to face and hybrid. For example, the Lessons Learned Toolkit is a call to NOT return to \u201cnormal\u201d but to implement new practices that are equity centered and informed by data.<\/p>\n<h2>Elsewhere in the resource library<\/h2>\n<p>Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae\u2019s growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/\">resources library<\/a> is, at present, a collection of 96 PDFs and 119 videos. It supports faculty who seek help in designing and facilitating quality online instruction within inclusive digital learning environments. Topics include digital learning and courseware, effective teaching practices, implementing adaptive learning, and equity in higher education. The library can be searched by keyword or filtered by topic, discipline, role, institution types, and date.<\/p>\n<p>It also includes two other quick collections of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/?collection=5661\">student care resources<\/a>, and archives from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/?collection=5653\">REMOTE: The connected faculty summit 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the teaching continuity resources collection is still relevant post-pandemic<\/h2>\n<p>O\u2019Sullivan says the phases described during the pandemic above apply to other types of situations. She cites how campuses were closed recently due to wildfires in the western United States, flood damage in Kentucky, and the water infrastructure crisis in Jackson, Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese natural disasters are getting broader, and they\u2019re affecting more people,\u201d she says. \u201cAdministrators and faculty need to expect the unexpected at this point and assume that part of serving their students will involve emergency shifts to remote learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/es\/resources\/?collection=5664\" title=\"Teaching Continuity Quick Collection\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"btn false\">Explore the teaching continuity resources<\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Users of Every Learner Everywhere\u00ae\u2019s comprehensive resource library can access a new \u201cquick collection\u201d of teaching continuity resources.
