This aggregation of racially and ethnically minoritized, poverty-affected, and first-generation students obscures significant variations in admissions, course-level outcomes, persistence, graduation, and career success. Digital learning is particularly lacking in disaggregated data. To make progress on equity, educators and institutional leaders must be able to balance seeing and examining the patterns of lived experience among people in specific student populations with hearing how every student\u2019s experience is unique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toward Ending the Monolithic View of \u201cUnderrepresented Students\u201d: Why Higher Education Must Account for Racial, Ethnic, and Economic Variations in Barriers to Equity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, synthesizes commentary, research, and programmatic activity on how higher education has grappled with disaggregating and using student data to confront and close equity gaps for particular student populations. A literature review of relevant studies and commentary was complemented by original interviews with 17 experts, including faculty, administrators, researchers, advocates, and students. Those experts are quoted at length throughout the report. The purpose of the report is to advance high-level evidence-based conversation about equity and learning \u2014 especially digital learning \u2014 in U.S. colleges and universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toward Ending the Monolithic View of \u201cUnderrepresented Students\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is organized into two parts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part 1: Why and How Accounting for Variations in Student Populations Matters for Equity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part 2: What Works to Remove Barriers to Equity for Unique Populations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interwoven into those parts are sections with background and related information including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the history and context of these racial, ethnic, and economic categories;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the various ways first generation is defined;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) provide models for equity-centered institutional culture;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exemplar programs; and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resources and tools for creating equity-centered educational institutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Appendix details where disaggregated student data does exist and provides a sampling of how that data could create more precise profiles of racially and ethnically minoritized students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/monolith-white-paper-FINAL-2-1.pdf\" class=\"btn\" target=\"_blank\"\">Download the full report<\/a>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everylearnereverywhere.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/monolith-executive-summary-FINAL-2-1.pdf\" class=\"btn\" target=\"_blank\"\">Download the executive summary<\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This report synthesizes commentary, research, and original interviews about how higher education has grappled with disaggregating and using student data to confront and close equity gaps for particular student populations.<\/p>","protected":false},"featured_media":5953,"template":"","resource_topic":[33,49,41,43,51],"resource_discipline":[],"resource_role":[11,9],"resource_institution_type":[],"class_list":["post-5933","resources","type-resources","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","resource_topic-digital-learning-courseware","resource_topic-equity-in-higher-education","resource_topic-learning-analytics","resource_topic-student-and-faculty-experience","resource_topic-student-experience","resource_role-administrator","resource_role-course-coordinators"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
