This is a practical course/workshop focused on four instructional methodologies related to dynamic, interactive, and socializing learning. It is designed for educators seeking to enhance student engagement and promote active, student-centered learning in their courses. Throughout the course/workshop, the participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of four key instructional methodologies; case studies, problem-based learning, project-based learning, and cooperative learning. Study of the similarities and differences between the models presented. Design of social learning experiences with the models presented to put them into practice in real learning experiences. By studying these approaches, the participant will learn how to create meaningful real-world learning experiences that foster critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of four active instructional methodologies: Case Studies, Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning, and Cooperative Learning.
  • Learn how to develop and integrate Case Studies into the course to encourage critical thinking, decision-making, and real-world application.
  • Explore methods for designing PBL activities that promote student inquiry, problem-solving, and independent research.
  • Discover techniques for planning and managing Project-Based Learning projects that foster creativity, collaboration, and understanding.
  • Understand how to structure Cooperative Learning activities to promote teamwork, peer-to-peer learning, and communication.
  • Learn how to select, combine, and balance these instructional methodologies within the courses to accommodate diverse learning styles needs.
  • Identify common challenges educators face when implementing these teaching methods and explore practical solutions.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of Case Studies, Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning and Cooperative Learning, including its principles, benefits, and applications.
  • Learn how to integrate Case Studies, Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning, and Cooperative Learning into a cohesive and balanced teaching approach that will promote critical thinking and real-world application.
  • Develop the skills to design and facilitate PLB activities that encourage inquiry, research, and problem-solving. 
  • Understand how to design Project-Based Learning experiences that foster creativity, collaboration, and understanding of subject matter.
  • Learn to effectively structure and facilitate Cooperative Learning activities that promote teamwork, communication, and peer-to-peer learning.
  • Gain insights into effective assessment and feedback methods tailored to each active learning approach, including peer and self-assessment.

  3. A collection of supplementary reading resources such as articles, guides, and templates to enhance learning and application.
