Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning Approaches and Strategies

Intended Audience:

Cross-functional teams that include faculty (full-time and adjunct), faculty developers, instructional designers, academic affairs leaders (e.g., department chairs and deans)

Service Model:

This service model is designed for faculty cohorts and cross functional team experiences. The model includes Community of Practice and Train the Trainer structure. This service format takes a blended approach to professional learning. Participants will engage in synchronous sessions with asynchronous assignments between each session.

Modalities:

The modality takes a hybrid approach to virtual learning. This service consists of facilitated and scheduled sessions.

This service supports cross-functional teams of academic leaders, faculty, and staff to design and implement culturally responsive instruction. In this service, educators will be guided through an examination of equity-minded approaches, such as culturally responsive, affirming and sustaining teaching strategies that leverage digital learning. Throughout this train-the-trainer service, participants will engage with instructional practices that impact student success in gateway courses and how pairing evidence-based teaching with digital learning technologies can advance learning for Black, Latino/a/x, Indigenous and poverty-affected, and first-generation students. Participants will learn how to use, train, and assess teaching practices that improve student experiences and performance in blended, in-person, and online learning environments. Facilitators will introduce specific tools to implement equity-centered strategies to redesign and analyze curriculum, syllabi, and instructional practices. By the end of the sessions, participants will develop an implementation plan for course redesign.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this workshop series, participants will be able to:

  • Build institutional capacity to serve Black, Latino/a/x, Indigenous, poverty-affected, and first-generation students through digital teaching and learning with an equity-minded and student-centered instructional focus.
  • Implement culturally responsive teaching practices, tools, and strategies that lead to student success, engagement, and improved outcomes.
  • Operationalize an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning.
  • Create course curriculum, assignments, and assessments that validate, affirm, and embrace the diverse perspectives, lived experiences, and cultures of students.
  • Develop cultural competence and equity minded practitioner skills and strategies.
