Service Model:

Gateway courses are typically at the first-year or introductory level and include those without which students cannot proceed to higher-level courses within their major. They are typically high-enrollment, general-education courses in disciplines like mathematics with higher rates of withdrawals or grades of D or F. Because mathematics is usually a general education requirement in college, these disparities are pronounced regardless of the student’s major. This service focuses on a collaborative, team-based approach to mathematics course redesign that incorporates math courseware. In any learning modality, in-person, online, or hybrid, such courseware is used to help students review, practice, and remediate in targeted areas where they need the most help. This series enables instructors, department leadership, and other administrators to select high-quality math courseware and pair it with evidence-based instructional practices. Through a series of targeted exercises, participants will also learn to leverage data from courseware and other digital tools to personalize the support they give to students.
