Adopting Adaptive Learning: Pedagogies and Practices

During this webinar attendees will learn how faculty from Achieving the Dream (ATD) colleges that participated in the Every Learner Everywhere Initiative integrated adaptive learning into their courses, the ways adopting adaptive learning influenced their classroom practice, and the outcomes the use of adaptive courseware has had on their students.

There is often the misconception that adaptive courseware is an automated, turnkey solution that requires little customization to be effective. However, the truth is it is the courseware that needs to be adapted: to the subject matter of the course, a faculty member’s approach to teaching, the students, and so on. The reality is that integrating adaptive courseware into the classroom takes time to get right. During this webinar, faculty from ATD colleges that participated in the Every Learner Everywhere Initiative will discuss their experiences integrating adaptive courseware into their classrooms. Every Learner Everywhere is a network of organizations, which includes ATD, with expertise in evaluating, implementing, scaling, and measuring the efficacy of education technologies, curriculum and course design strategies, teaching practices, and support services that personalize instruction. In this session, faculty from Every Learner colleges will discuss how adaptive learning influenced their classroom practice, the outcomes the use of adaptive courseware has had on their students, and the role adaptive learning has played during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderators: Nate Angell, Every Learner Everywhere Coach at ATD; Ruanda Garth-McCullough, Associate Director of Teaching & Learning at ATD; Richard Sebastian, Director of Open and Digital Learning at ATD

Speakers: Karen Stout, President and CEO of Achieving the Dream; Jeffrey Rogers, Senior Instructional Designer at Cuyahoga Community College; Tim Huber, Director and Associate Professor of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; Jerry McFadden, Assistant Professor of Accounting and Business Administration at Lorain Community College

Adaptive Learning Webinar Series

As part of the Every Learner Everywhere initiative, ATD partners with a network of 11 higher education and digital learning organizations to advance equity and improve student outcomes at colleges and universities by providing scalable, high-quality supports for effective digital learning solutions. As part of this effort, ATD has been working with 7 ATD network colleges to integrate adaptive courseware in select foundational courses to improve student completion rates. During this series of four webinars, faculty and staff from ATD’s Every Learner colleges will share their experiences implementing adaptive learning at their colleges.

Explore how adaptive learning tools and practices can transform science courses to increase student success with educators from ATD colleges that participated in the Every Learner Everywhere initiative. The quality, availability, and effectiveness of adaptive courseware varies depending on the subject matter of the course. While there are common implementation challenges shared across disciplines, integrating adaptive learning into the curriculum of an English course, for example, often requires a different approach than for a Biology or History course. The final webinar in our Adaptive Learning series continues our exploration of the experiences community college faculty from specific disciplines have had integrating adaptive courseware into their classroom curricula.

This series is recommended for higher education professionals interested in learning more about the promise and the hype of adaptive courseware. The webinars are sponsored by Achieving the Dream and the Every Learner Everywhere network and are free and open to everyone.
