The Career Readiness Imperative in Gateway Courses

A Student Success Perspective, Trend Report, and Emerging Playbook

The Career Readiness Imperative in Gateway Courses: A Student Success Perspective, Trend Report, and Emerging Playbook examines the growing trend of U.S. colleges and universities integrating career readiness into academic courses, with particular attention to gateway and general education courses early in degree programs. It focuses on how students experience the relevance of what they learn in these early courses, and it provides strategies institutions can use to help students experience that relevance earlier, more explicitly, and more consistently.

The report combines comprehensive desk research with original interviews with 17 faculty, program directors, and other subject matter experts who make career readiness within early academic courses an expression of student success, student care, and access. Those educators situate career readiness as a necessary and productive response to students who have urgent questions about the relevance degree programs have to their professional futures.

In three parts, The Career Readiness Imperative in Gateway Courses:

  • Argues that connecting the dots between academic course material and students’ career goals offers a path that honors both disciplinary integrity and student motivations and holds promise for strengthening engagement, belonging, and academic success
  • Outlines eight trends among programs shifting this work from isolated experimentation to planned, institution-wide strategies
  • Presents an emerging playbook, with separate sections devoted to programmatic and administrative leadership and to faculty and departments updating individual courses

The report also includes multiple inspiring examples, resources lists, and an annotated bibliography for readers seeking to explore this subject more comprehensively.

The trends outlined and the institutions profiled in The Career Readiness Imperative in Gateway Courses demonstrate that career readiness is a way of helping students understand and articulate the purpose of their education. In that sense, connecting academic learning to students’ future careers is a matter of educational responsibility, support, and care for every learner.
